The bold statement that one day all wheels will be square would appear to initially be the thoughts of a sadly deluded inventor who, for some reason, was not aware of the distinct head-start that the round wheel already has on its square-faced counterpart.
Wheels when they are round just make sense you will no doubt agree but this infographic attempts to show how some people are challenging conventional thinking and trying to introduce a new cubist-movement era or even go as far as trying to provoke a non-circular revolution.
Amazingly, you will see that the inventors of the Shark Wheel have effectively reinvented the wheel for the benefit of skateboarders in particular. The design and shape of their wheel apparently trumps the characteristics of a conventional round wheel. Circular wheels have either speed or traction but apparently they dont have both whereas square wheels can provide both speed and traction at the same time, so dismiss the square-eyed boffins at your peril if that theory can be put into practice.
Mythbusters took up the challenge to see if the square wheel could defy conventional wisdom and actually outperform the traditional wheel. You would not think that a vehicle with square wheels could offer any sort of comfortable ride at all, but amazingly it seems that if you can survive the initially and inevitable bumpy start, then by the time you get to beyond 20 mph you actually get quite a smooth ride.
It seem that square wheels are not quite the ridiculous idea that you might think, and when Mythbusters also put square wheels on a cart, they found that by turning the opposite-corner wheels 45 degrees out they could get the cart to move as smoothly as one with normal wheels.
It is probably stretching it too far to say that one day all wheels will be square but as you will see, the concept is not as flawed as you probably thought.
