Gearbox Future

Small car, small engine and conventional automatic gearbox simply do not speak the same language, or at least not to those who would like to understand the driver.

Proof of this is a very minor proportion of automatic transmissions in urban models of just a few percent. The problem is not just one. Small engines are quite ineffective; there are losses in the torque converter, but also a very bad feeling in driving, which reduces comfort. Well, who would then want to drive city car with an automatic transmission, especially since it’s still more expensive than the manual? Nobody, but that is soon to change.

Automated manual transmissions and gearboxes, which typically we call robotic, have not reached its peak. Such system used Citroën, but is best known for mounting In a Smart. That says everything. Robotics as a solution is not bad because it uses proven control technology and relies on the concept of manual transmissions, but … Ride comfort with these gearboxes is very low. Changes take too long and there is a large load which causes even “worship” of the vehicle. There is room for improvement, especially if the DSG and not subsist in mini vehicles. Why? The situation is simply that such a classic automatics, even perfect, will never make it to the small motor space in city cars.

Driving without changing speed in small cars will bring a step-less CVT transmission. They are very popular in small cars in Asia, and we are witnesses and their installation in new hybrid vehicles, which in its own way also show the future. The idea CVT gearbox is fantastic for smooth changes of gear ratios and the possibility of continuous work in the optimal range.

What does this mean? Simply, driving at high speeds will be achievable at even lower RPM, IE, consumption will probably be much lower. Such a relationship ratios really opens many possibilities.
