The Five Best SUVs With Top Safety Ratings

Designed as family-friendly vehicles, SUVs typically have advanced safety features to ensure that passengers are as protected as possible

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts annual safety tests on all passenger vehicles. The following are five SUVs which received the highest safety ratings for 2014:

Volvo XC60

Features like Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Information System give the Volvo XC60 a major boost when it comes to safety. The new City Safety software is optimized to automatically apply brakes if the driver does not react quickly to an impending collision. The Volvo SUV Roll Stability Control and Dynamic Stability Control for the chassis are also included in the XC60, to ensure a safe ride for all passengers.

Ford Explorer

Ford's engineers have redefined the Explorer as an SUV that delivers economic performance with reliable safety features. The innovative inflatable second row seat belts minimize injury from sudden jerking during a crash. Additionally, the Safety Canopy airbags design protects passengers during rollovers. High strength, boron-reinforced steel construction gives the Ford Explorer plenty of structural integrity. A terrain management system ensures that this Ford SUV stays on track on any type of paved or unpaved surface.

Toyota Venza

For an affordable crossover SUV, the Toyota Venza excels in the safety department. The high beam headlamps turn on automatically in response to outdoor light conditions, accounting for safety issues like sudden loss of sight when entering a tunnel. The new Star Safety System which comes in every Venza features six unique highlights, including Vehicle Stability Control, Smart Stop Technology and Brake Assist. The convex, blind spot mirrors give drivers an alert during dangerous lane changes and other traffic conditions. The driver also has extra protection in the Venza, with knee and side air bags supplementing the standard steering wheel airbag.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is another affordable, spacious and safe crossover SUV. The Vehicle Stability Management included improves handling designed to accommodate up to seven different drivers. The navigation system can be linked to the Connected Care subscription, Hyundai's roadside assistance and help hotline.

Lexus RX

As a luxurious SUV, the Lexus RX is equipped with state-of-the-art digital safety features such as Pre Collision Warning and a Dynamic Cruise Control system that uses radar technology. The Safety Connect software allows drivers to call for help at any time through GPS signals. A rigid body and ten total standard airbags give the Lexus RX passengers extra protection in the event of a collision, which motor accident lawyers in St. John’s report as being effective at protecting accident victims from serious harm.

Designed as family-friendly vehicles, SUVs typically have advanced safety features to ensure that passengers are as protected as possible. Modern digital technology gives these five Sport Utility Vehicles a leg up on the competition, as far as safety ratings go, earning them the top spots with the IIHS.
