Car Design Events to Keep Your Eye On

A distinctive vehicle design can come to be synonymous with the whole brand. Think of Volkswagen’s Beetle, and how it came to be an icon of an entire era. Whether sporty, classic, or luxurious, the design of a car is a vital factor in the buying decision.

We all like to drive cars. And as much as we care about performance and power, as human beings we’re also attracted to aesthetic elements. For that reason, the design of a car is very important. Design is about a lot more than just looking pretty.

If you want to keep up-to-date on the best looking and most innovative rides around, take note of the world’s most prestigious car design awards and events, which reward the models that set the industry standards.

EyesON Design

EyesOn Design hosts a series of events throughout the year, focusing on the emotion and character of automotive design.

One of its events is the EyesOn Design Automotive Design, which is one of America’s most prestigious automotive events. Members of the transportation design community, as well as collectors and enthusiasts, gather to celebrate and reflect on design.

EyesOn Design is also responsible for the "Lifetime Design Achievement" award, which is awarded to an accomplished automotive designer that is selected by previous winners. Each year’s recipient will join a group of some of the most prominent designers from around the world.

The Design of the Year Awards

Some of the shortlisted entries this year for the Design of the Year Awards included a syringe that changes colour when opened, a wheelchair that grows as a child grows, and a pyramid-shaped school that floats on a lagoon in Nigeria. There are seven categories: architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphic, product, and of course, transport. The nominated designs are on display at the Design Museum from March 26th to August 25th.

This year, the award for transport design went to to the Volkswagen XL1, which will now go on to compete with the other category winners for a shot at being the overall Design of the Year winner.

The Red Dot Design Awards

This is an international product design prize awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany.  Prize categories include product design, design agencies, and design concepts.

As design promoters, Red Dot Design spreads the idea of design by highlighting the importance of design for business and society, and presenting the latest developments in design. The annual award has over 11 000 submissions from 61 countries, with previous winners including the Opel Astra and the Kia Picanto.

Michelin Challenge Design

Michelin North America, Inc. started the annual Michelin Challenge Design to celebrate, promote, and publicise innovation and creative thinking in vehicle design.

What Michelin looks out for are exciting and passionate designs that employ innovative vehicle architecture and technologies, without compromising on the necessities of functionality, safety or comfort. A jury evaluates the entrants based on specific criteria: relevance to the theme, concept originality, design value and quality, developmental potential, and design displayability.

A distinctive vehicle design can come to be synonymous with the whole brand. Think of Volkswagen’s Beetle, and how it came to be an icon of an entire era. Whether sporty, classic, or luxurious, the design of a car is a vital factor in the buying decision.
