Best Family Car Choices for 2014

When you are shopping for a family car, you want to look for something that is both safe and reliable.

Gone are the days when we only had a handful of cars from which to choose. Today, finding a family car can be a real dilemma with so many great vehicles available, from cars and minivans to SUVs and wagons. To lighten the load for you a little, I’m providing a list of five of the best family car choices for 2014.

Chevy Impala

Unlike Impalas from the past, this car ranks right up there with the best. U.S. News & World Report ranks the 2014 Chevy Impala #1 among the top ten most affordable large cars of 2014. It offers excellent handling, limo-like space, a large easy-to-access truck and state-of-the-art electronics. The 2014 Impala offers three engine types: a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, a 3.6 liter V-6 and a hybrid for the environmental-minded driver. Fuel economy, while not the greatest, still offers 21city/31highway mpg.

Honda Accord

Can a year every go by where the Honda Accord isn’t right on top? The 2014 Accord is no exception, with its excellent fuel economy (27/36 mpg), spacious interior, intuitive climate controls, collision warning and touch-screen interface. The Honda Accord is available as a 2.5, 4-cylinder, a 3.5 liter, V-6, a hybrid and even a plug-in hybrid in some areas. For safety, this family car ranked 9.6 out of 10. Perhaps this is attributed to the camera, which is mounted under the passenger side mirror, that allows you to see everything behind you..What’s also great about this car is that the MSRP averages under $33,000.

Ford Fusion

The 2014 Fusion offers various engine types: the standard 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder, 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The 1.5 liter offers a 23/36 city/highway mpg, while the hybrid Fusion offers a whopping 49mpg regardless of where you’re driving. Features that make this car fantastic are a spacious interior, smooth handling, quiet power train, heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats. The Fusion Hybrid was voted not only best hybrid car for the money but also best hybrid car for families by the U.S. News & World Report.

Honda Odyssey

Sometimes no matter how much we want a car, our family size requires a van and the Honda Odyssey offers all you need and more. The 19/28mpg is not too shabby for a vehicle of this size. The 3.5 liter, V-6 power train provides a smooth ride and vehicle you’ll love driving. Its 9.7 safety rating makes it just want you want in a family car. Other great features include remote keyless entry, power-adjustable front seats and three rows of seating.

Mazda Mazda6

Although the Mazda6 is limited in power trains (a 2.5, 4-cylinder and a 2.2 liter, turbo-diesel), it offers everything you could want in an affordable family sedan. It ranked 4th among 21 affordable midsize cars, featuring a mpg of 26/38, a roomy interior, 11-speaker Bose surround system, blind-spot monitoring system and Mazda’s famous Smart City Brake Support system.

Shopping around for a family car doesn’t have to be the daunting experience we imagine. By narrowing down your choices to a few of the best-rated cars and doing your research, it can be a rewarding experience for the entire family!
