One of the biggest concerns when purchasing a car should be the safety that car provides for its driver and passengers. Historically, some of the most unsafe cars have been initially popular because of their economical prices. In the past, these unsafe vehicles were largely produced by American manufacturers, while the most accident prone cars of today are largely imported. Included here are some of the most notoriously unsafe cars ever produced and what made them so dangerous.

The Spawn of The Energy Crisis (mid 1970's)

Two cars that were manufactured in the United States as a response to the oil crisis and gasoline price hikes of the 1970's were the Ford Pinto and the Chevrolet Chevette. Both of these fall into the category of compact cars and were designed to be inexpensive to buy and inexpensive to operate. A big problem that the Pinto became known for and the Chevette was also susceptible to was rear end collisions impacting the fuel tank. The Pinto was especially prone to exploding upon impact.

Mid-Engine Fiascos

Cars that have their engine mounted towards the middle of the chassis have been popular with more exclusive manufacturers, some of the offerings to the mass market have not fared so well. The Chevrolet Corvair was a mid engine car with a faulty heating system that caused dangerous fumes to enter the passenger compartment. It also had a bad steering column design which could impale the driver upon impact. The Pontiac Fiero was also a mid engine car from General Motors with its own set of problems. It was designed to hold a smaller amount of oil than most cars which led to many fires in the cars.

Newer Imported Problems

Currently, several imported cars are prone to accidents due to the way they are driven. Smaller, sporty cars have become popular and many young drivers modify them to enhance their performance. These cars tend to be driven more recklessly. Accidents involving these vehicles are more deadly because of the speeds driven. The Scion TC and the Mitsubishi Lancer are two popular cars in this class that fare poorly in crashes.

Dangerous Cars Increase More than Risks

Driving a car that has a poor safety record will cost you in higher insurance costs because insurance companies tend to raise rates on these cars. Know ahead of time that choosing one of these cars will cost you, even if it doesn't cost you your life. If you need to get a car insurance quote, Spriggs Insurance Brokers Limited is a great company to contact.
